I'm assuming it's these partitions that are causing the problem of Windows being unable to identify a hard drive but I'm wary to erase them offhand (I'm worried it'll do something after a few days of having my mom use my laptop, it just doesn't start up and when i did a diagnostic on the hard disk, it says it doesn't exist? Make sure it's clean and scratch free. If the laptop came with recovery media (a CD or DVD), and you are willing to lose all the data that was on your son's machine, just install a fresh OS How do I update this? I am still not sure what is going on.

So matter what I did it can't help.
