More often than not, when the hard drives are starting to have a mechanical failure, when they are plugged into the USB port they act exactly as you are describing. It has the beta firmware installed and that was working fine before. It is only in this instance that freezing will work. Since the update, my USB 3.0 are now stable and fast (copying a 4 Gb file is around 95Mb/s)!I hope this will help you. I would *not* recommend putting the whole laptop in the freezer.

In order to try the software route the drive must be detected by the computer with the correct capacity.
